JOIN THE HUDSON COUNTY FREEHOLDER MEETING
No ICE in Hudson County
What's the status of Hudson County's ICE contract?
On November 24th, the Hudson County Freeholders ignored more than 10 hours of unanimous public comment from people currently and formerly detained, attorneys representing them, clergy, and Hudson County/NJ residents against any relationship with ICE by voting 6-3 to renew the contract for 10 years -- the maximum period of time allowed by law. Video of the meeting is available on YouTube.
The contract's renewal went into immediate effect after the vote, but Tom DeGise has the power to cancel it.
Why are there nightly vigils?
Hudson County residents and families of people impacted by ICE detention have used every available channel to influence local Hudson County Democrats. At every turn, Hudson County Freeholders and County Executive DeGise have dismissed our efforts. Sustained protest and vigil are the only options these local Democrats have left for us.
We believe our democracy should function better than this, but this is our last resort. You can learn about our most recent efforts here and find comments from other Democratic leaders here.
Where do we go from here?
Now that the vote has passed, the status of the contract is now firmly in the hands of the Hudson County Executive, Tom DeGise, who can unilaterally cancel the contract with 30 days notice.
Call Tom and his Chief of Staff, Craig Guy, to let them know they need to end the ICE contract now

Suggested Script and Talking Points
Hello Mr. DeGise, my name is XXX [IF YOU LIVE IN HUDSON COUNTY: and I am a resident of Hudson County], and I want you to immediately give notice to ICE and begin to transition out of the contract. Hudson County has already attracted national attention for its hypocritical position on immigration and its complete lack of a moral core in maintaining this contract. The county’s notoriety will only get worse now with the statements from Senator Booker and Senator Menendez. I believe they used the word “blood money” -- that was activist's own phrase, but the leaders of your party have now adopted it. Your collaboration with ICE not only serves no good purpose, it facilitates the atrocities of ICE throughout the country. At the height of the family separation crisis at the southern border, ICE was sending the parents whose children they had ripped from their arms to jails like yours in New Jersey. Your jail was already a deadly place before COVID-19 which added another five deaths connected to your facility to the tally. It doesn’t matter how many improvements you made to it, you can’t bring those people back and that is on you. Do not continue this contract with racism, xenophobia and death. Meet with the stakeholders who assembled at the last meeting to oppose the contract and bring it to a responsible and quick end. Again my name is XXX and my contact information is XXX.
